Such advance knowledge is based upon deduction and observation of physical laws.\n\nThe 'ilmu 'l\u2011ghayb which is mentioned in the Qur'an as the sole prerogative of Allah, is the knowlege of the unseen things and future events which is not based on deduction or observation of physical laws: It is this type of knowledge which has been referred to in the following verse:\n\n(Allah is) the Knower of the unseen, and nor does He reveal His secrets to any one, except the one whom He chooses from among the messengers; for verily He causes a guard to march before him and after him. (72:26\u201127)\n\nThis verse and many similar verses declare in unambiguous terms that the knowledge of unseen things and future events, not based on observation of physical laws or deduction, is with God only. And He, in His own wisdom, selects some messengers, prophets and Imams to divulge to them such knowledge as and when He thinks fit.\n\nIn short, nobody can know the unseen things or future events (without some present signs or deductions) except Allah. And Allah, in His grace, informs whoever He selects for such knowledge, be they angels, prophets or Imams.\n\nIslam orthodox\nHebraicus\nhis infant son is presented to illustrate Islamic\nmourning rituals.\nEPIDEMIOLOGY OF DEATH \nAMONG MUSLIM CHILDREN\nDeveloping nations tend to have higher child-\nhood mortality rates than industrialized nations.8\nMuslim children die of various causes depending\non the country in which they live. Childhood\nmortality rate and exposure to the death of a prior\nchild varies as well. Violent deaths are frequent\nin war-stricken areas such as Palestine9 and\nIraq.10 In countries such as Somalia, with little or\nno health care infrastructure, respiratory and di-\narrheal deaths predominate.11 Some countries\nhave little violent or illness-related deaths as a re-\nsult of advanced health care systems but high\ntraffic-related deaths for children, such as the\nUnited Arab Emirates.12 Therefore, there is no\nuniform experience with childhood deaths\namong immigrant Muslims.\nBlack children in the United States have dou-\nble the mortality of white children. They are also\ntwice as likely to die a violent death resulting\nfrom gang-related violence.13 It is estimated that\napproximately one third of all Muslims in the\nUnited States are black, mainly inner city\ndwellers. At present, no figures are available to\ndifferentiate between the mortality rate of black\nMuslim and black Christian children in the\nUnited States, or between Muslim and non-Mus-\nlim immigrants. However, most immigrant\ngroups have lower incidents of violent death in\nchildren under 14 compared to native children.\nThis finding has been attributed to more tradi-\ntional parenting models and emphasis on family\nvalues among immigrants.14\nISLAM\nIslam is a monotheistic religion established \nin 610 AD by the Prophet Muhammad. Islam is \nan Abrahamic faith, like Judaism and Christian-\nity, through Abraham\u2019s first son, Ishmael, the\nforefather of the Prophet Muhammad. The tenets\nand practices of Islam are simple and easy to \nfollow, contributing to its spread across a wide\ngeographic area (Table 1). There is no \u201ctypical\u201d\nMuslim: 40\u0025 are Asian from India, Pakistan,\nAfghanistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, and the\nPhilippines, etc.; 30\u0025 are from sub-Saharan\nAfrica; 20\u0025 are from the Middle East (including\nnon-Arab Iran and Turkey); 3\u0025 are native to Eu-\nrope; and 1\u0025 are native to the Americas (the lat-\nter two include converts and immigrants).15 Put\nanother way, there are more Muslims in China\nthan there are in Saudi Arabia, and more in Nige-\nria than in Iraq, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon com-\nbined.\nIn the United States, Islam is the fastest grow-\ning religion. There are 5 million Muslims in the\nUnited States and currently represent the second\nlargest religious group after Christians. Thus,\nmore people in the United States are Muslim than\nBaptist or Jewish.15 The typical convert tends to\nbe an urban African American male, although,\namong Caucasians and Latinos, more women\nconvert than men, and they tend to be college ed-\nucated.16 The racial\/ethnic identity among Mus-\nlims living in America is as follows: 30\u0025 black,\n27\u0025 Caucasian, 33\u0025 Southeast Asian.\nNo papacy exists in Islam. There are scholars,\nacknowledged as experts in matters of law and\nethics, whose opinions may be sought for con-\ntentious or contemporary issues, like the ones\npresented below. Scholars have divergent opin-\nions on new issues and it is important to approach\neach Muslim patient or family as unique person\nand not a stone tablet with an indelible set of be-\nliefs. Furthermore, each person\u2019s adherence to Is-\nlamic vs. cultural or personal beliefs will vary.\nThis paper attempts to present commonly held\nbeliefs among the two major Islamic sects, Shia\nand Sunni.\nCHILDREN IN ISLAM\nIn Islam, children are a gift from God and de-\nscribed as the \u201cjoy of our eyes\u201d (25:74). Children\nare to be respected in Islam as individuals with\ninherent rights (Table 2), applying equally to boys\nand girls. In fact, girls are a special joy in Islam.\nThe Prophet Muhammad said, \u201cWhat good off-\nspring are girls!\u201d17 He also urged parents to take\nspecial care of girls, providing them with \u201ca\nproper upbringing, good education, and ade-\nquate material resources and recreational oppor-\ntunities.\u201d18\nThe role of parents is highly regarded in Islam\ntoo.
